Information on LMO research safety education
by National Research Safety Headquarters

The National Research Safety Headquarters provides various education programs about LMO safety for persons related to the enforcement of the LMO Act. Especially, organizations that operate Safety Management Level 2 research facilities are required to designate a biosafety management director (mandatory) and a biosafety manager (recommended) who should complete relevant education. We hope active participation of those who are related to the enforcement of the LMO Act and those who are interested in LMO and biosafety education.

01. Education for Biosafety Managers

According to the revised Public Notification, organizations that operate Safety Management Level 2 research facilities are required to designate a biosafety management director (mandatory) and a biosafety manager (recommended). This program is a certification course for such personnel, which consists of 8-hour education on general biosafety, LMO Act and regulations, organization and roles of Biosafety Committee, safety management for research facilities, and practical exercise. Persons who have completed this program become eligible for designation as a biosafety management director or a biosafety manager.

02. Education on LMO Basics

This program aims to enhance biosafety management capabilities of those who did not major in biology and are engaged in safety management of research facilities. This course is provided for two consecutive days, twice a year (May and October), which consists of education on basic biotechnology theories and test practices related to LMO.

03. Education for Research Directors

This program aims to enhance biosafety management capabilities of those who majored in biology and are working as biosafety management directors, research facility directors, etc.This course provides essential information that research directors should acquire for the use of LMO and the management of research facilities. It will take place twice a year (June and December). We hope for your active participation and interest. ※ Recognition of Education for Biosafety Managers and the Extension Education

04. Education for Research Personnel

This program aims to provide education for researchers who use LMO. This four-hour course includes education on introduction to biosafety, LMO Act and regulations, safety management of research facilities, safety management tour to bio-research facilities, use of personal protective gear, and responses to leak accidents. ※ Recognition of Education for Biosafety Managers and the Extension Education

05. Visiting Education

This program aims to provide education for organizations that wish to learn about LMO and biosafety by sending instructors to the site of the requesting organization. This is a two-hour course on biosafety, LMO Act and regulations, safety management of research facilities, etc. The content can be adjusted depending on the characteristics of the requesting organization. This program is available throughout the year. Application should be made in advance through Information System on LMO for Test and Research, which will be followed by discussion on education.

06. Specialized Education

This program aims to allow organizations (companies, schools, etc.) that wish to participate in the program to visit KRIBB (in Ochang) to receive education on LMO safety management and tour the research facilities. The educational content can be composed differently depending on the characteristics of the visiting organization. Application should be made in advance through Information System on LMO for Test and Research, which will be followed by discussion on education.

07. Consulting on Safety Management of LMO Research Facilities

The KRSH holds standard models for research facilities related to safety management of LMO and makes a public notification on standard research facilities for organizations that are subject to the 2015 Safety Inspection on LMO Research Facilities, which is conducted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. As such, organizations that wish to receive consulting on matters related to the LMO Act and safety management of research facilities can submit an application in advance through Information System on LMO for Test and Research, which will be followed by discussion on the consulting service.
