LMO Act

About LMO

What is Living Modified Organism (LMO)?

Any living organism that possesses a novel combination of genetic
material obtained through modern biotechnology.

The term was first introduced in the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which emphasizes the reproduction or breeding ability of living organisms.

What is modern biotechnology?

  • Techniques for the manipulation of genes or the direct insertion of nucleic acid that comprise genes into cells or organelles
  • Techniques for the fusion of cells beyond the taxonomic family, that overcome natural physiological reproductive or recombination barriers and that are not techniques used in traditional breeding and selection

What is a living organism?

  • Any form of life (including non-reproductive organisms, viruses and viroids) that can transfer or reproduce genetic material

The difference between LMO and GMO

  • GMO refers to genetically modified organisms that include LMO and material obtained through LMO-based manufacturing and processing. It includes organisms not capable of reproduction or breeding as well.
