About LMO

LMO Classification by Use

  • The Transboundary Movement, Etc. of Living Modified Organisms Act (LMO Act) prescribes the classification of LMO by use and regulates safety management by seven government agencies depending on the use.
  • LMO is classified by use into: LMO for test and research; for agriculture, forestry and livestock; for industry; for health and medical treatment; for environmental remediation; and, for ocean and fisheries.

※ The definition of LMO by use is based on Article 1-2 of Consolidated Public Notification on Transboundary Movement, Etc. of Living Modified Organisms (LMO Consolidated Public Notification).

For Test and Research LMO that is used in sealed conditions for the purpose of test and research
For Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock LMO that is used for agriculture, forestry and livestock
  • LMO for seed that is used for environmental discharge
  • LMO for original or processed form of feed
  • Other LMO for agriculture, forestry and livestock
For Industry LMO that is used for industry, including textile, machinery, chemicals, electronics and resources, excluding LMO used for test and research, agriculture, and health and medical treatment
For Health and Medical Treatment LMO that is used for protection and promotion of public health
  • LMO for food
  • Other LMO for health and medical treatment
For Environmental Remediation LMO that is used for protection and promotion of public health
  • LMO for food
  • Other LMO for health and medical treatment
For Ocean and Fisheries LMO that stems from sea and inland waters and is used in the areas of ocrean or fisheries
  • LMO for transfer (for seed) that is used for environmental discharge
  • LMO for discharge for fishing or for ornamental use
  • Other LMO for ocean or fisheries
